Free monte carlo based retirement calculator...

Determining how much money you need to retire and how much you can safely withdraw from your portfolio each year is essential to retirement planning, yet good answers can be hard to find.

This website hosts a free online retirement calculator that attempts to address this by leveraging the power of Monte Carlo Simulation and the latest retirement planning research to give a better idea of your retirement plan’s chances for success.

Some key features of this powerful calculator:

Runs a full 10,000 Monte Carlo Simulation iterations over both the accumulation and distribution phases of the plan

Accounts for inflation and taxes (including IRA RMDs) in all calculations

Allows adjustments to the rate of return, annual savings, and annual expenses over the entire course of the plan

Lets you experiment with what-if scenarios like a large stock market drop, or an unexpected long-term care expense

Comes with complete documentation, including listings of peer reviewed source code

It’s FREE!  Click here to try it.

One of the inspirations for the calculator was research that suggests that retirees who manage their retirement spending in response to their portfolio’s performance may be able to safely draw from their portfolio at higher rates than previously thought.  See the Further Reading section of this site for more resources about Monte Carlo Simulation, safe withdrawal rates, retirement withdrawal decision rules, and dynamic retirement withdrawals.

Another important capability of this planner is its ability to help you experiment with different scenarios that might affect your retirement.  For example, you can simulate what might happen if you’re hit with a series of large medical or long term care expenses in the later years of retirement.  Also, you can simulate a stock market crash in the early years of retirement.  The list goes on; What if Social Security goes bust?  What if tax rates go up?  You can build any these scenarios into your plan and run a simulation to see the results for yourself.

The flexibleRetirementPlanner (FRP) is the first calculator that lets you put all this research and flexibility to work for you with your own data.  Click on the image to the right to try it out!  The Flexible Retirement Planner is completely free to use and you don’t need to sign up for anything.
