Re: Entire Portfolio Rate of Return

Yes. I’ve done all of that, but thank you for the suggestion. I’ve become quite a “power user” of the planner over the years and I’m always amazed of the job and the updating that you’ve done with it. In addition to using all of the planner’s features, I’ve found that the real analysis comes with th...

Re: Entire Portfolio Rate of Return

Conceptually, that works. If it wasn’t for the impact of cash flows in and out of each portion of the overall portfolio, I’d probably be able to rely on that. But since the nature of cash flows is quite cyclical (accumulation vs. withdrawal stages) across the life of the plan for all three types of ...

Re: Entire Portfolio Rate of Return

No problem at all. I’ll see if there’s a way I can work with the existing data output to calculate a reasonably accurate number for each year and the entire time horizon.

Thanks!

Re: Entire Portfolio Rate of Return

Thank you for the response, Jim. It does make sense, but based on the explanation and unless you disagree, it appears that it’s not really an accurate performance measurement that can be used even for just the taxable portion of the portfolio. Unless I’m missing something, there doesn’t seem to be a...

Entire Portfolio Rate of Return

I've always wondered if the planner provides output that shows the calculated rate of return for the entire portfolio. For example, let's say I enter all of my rates of return for the different portions of the portfolio solely on the Additional Inputs screen. Those entries for the Tax Deferred porti...

Re: Using Planner to Present Results In Future Dollars Instead of Present Value Dollars

Thanks for your response. It’s a comfort to know that you also don’t see any problems using the planner in this manner to accurately project results in future dollars. I also thought that this would be helpful to others that have expressed a desire to use the planner to project results in future dol...

Using Planner to Present Results In Future Dollars Instead of Present Value Dollars

Hello Jim, I'm in the middle of my annual year end financial plan review. You might recall that you and I communicated in a thread in April 2021 regarding the way the planner applies an inflation rate that's entered on the main screen in relation to inflation rates that are entered and applied as ad...

Re: Inflation Adjustment Question

You understood me perfectly and you confirmed for me that I had it right the first time with Inflation set to zero on the Summary page and the COLA Types set to Fixed COLA. The only caveat I'd add is that I when suggested setting inflation to 0% on the main page, that was only for testing purposes,...

Re: Inflation Adjustment Question

If I understand you correctly, I think you can just use Fixed COLA at 10%. That results in the expense getting inflated at 10% starting in the first year of the plan and every year after that, regardless of when the actual start year of the expense. You understood me perfectly and you confirmed for...

Re: Inflation Adjustment Question

Yes. Assuming you choose the "track inflation" option when you create the cash flow in Additional Inputs the amount you enter will be annually adjusted for inflation, both before it begins as well as after it starts. After I read this, I realize that I need to make some adjustments to how...
