What about adding an option to go "back to work"?
Hi, Great online calculator – one of the nicest I’ve seen. Thanks. I have been poking at a question about early-early retirement. What if one modeled an optional “unretire” option as part of the simulation? Not just lower withdrawals or no COLA but a “back to work for 5 years” option. Maybe trigger ...

Re: Question on retirement account early withdrawal penalties?
Jim, Thanks for you speedy response. It sounds like there needs to be another option in the program to handle these different situations. I tried the trick of reducing the income tax rate by 10% as you suggested. That didn't work as I expected. I reduced my rate from 25% down to 15%, but it did not ...

Question on retirement account early withdrawal penalties?
Thank you for making this program available. I find it extremely useful. One thing that doesn't seem quite right. I noticed in the documentation that you state that a 10% penalty is taken out by the program if retirement funds are used prior to age 60. I believe that rule only applies if you are wit...

Comparing returns to those used in FireCalc calculator?
I've run the simulation multiple times and we traded emails on the Retire Early Forum. In your email you indicated you were conservative in the returns and standard deviations used. Do you happen to have a historical return for the length of data used in the FIRECalc calculator I've played with vari...

Flexible spending policy vs. Guyton Decision rules
Hi Jim, I've been looking at the Guyton & Klinger paper on this subject and appreciate being able to try some runs with your program. In doing so, I noticed that the default inputs in the space entitled "Spending Policy Configuration" are listed with dollar signs in front of them? For ...

Are retirement withdrawal amounts adjusted for inflation?
Very Cool Jim, Nice work. Hope you keep it up. In inputting the yearly retirement withdrawal amount, (Say $50,000), is that figure adjusted for inflation? In other words, when I tell the program I want 50,000 per year, but I dont want it until 2027, that 50,000 figure is more equivelant to say, 70,0...

Re: Are retirement expense amounts adjusted for inflation?
Jim, Thanks for the note. I am not terribly familiar with standard deviation-know I should be, but frankly am not. I am a fairly conservative investor and in fairly good shape for retirement. If I choose a rate of return of about 6.0, what standard deviations would be appropriate? I suspect that is ...

Are retirement expense amounts adjusted for inflation?
Playing around with your calculator-hope it is as accurate as simple. Thanks for posting it. When data is entered, there is a input for Inflation. In the results tab, there is a column labeled “Planned Expenses”. The Planned Expenses column in results shows a continuous fixed withdrawal. Is that adj...

Re: How do I handle taxes on withdrawals I make at retirement?
Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. The social security article is quite good. Concerning taxes, here is my situation. Nearly all of my assets are in tax deferred 401-k’s and IRA’s with very little tax basis, so it is essentially all taxable income as I make withdrawals. Let’s say I withdraw $100,000 p...

How do I handle taxes on withdrawals I make at retirement?
Hi Jim, Thanks for developing this great tool….and for making it available! I found out about it from Retired Investor. I am recently retired and nearly all of my retirement has been rolled over into a tax deferred IRA. I have a couple questions about using the flexible Retirement Planner. Since the...
