One other thing you can try in this case is to reduce the captial gains tax rate to account for a more tax efficient portfolio. Instead of the default 15%, you might try 10% or 12%

Re: "Median Portfolio Value By Year" graph mouseover error
ice2,
Thanks for reporting this. Unfortunately, when I tried this myself I couldn't reproduce the problem. I always seem to get the mouseover popup just fine.
Do you see this every time you use the app or does it start to happen only in certain circumstances?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Great tool
Tim, Thanks for posting. As it turns out, providing the website and planner for free is really a two-way street. First, I get great feedback and suggestions. Also, I use the tool in my own retirement planning, so it's good to have people questioning how everything works and challenging the planner's...

Re: Is there a way to have a plan finish with zero $ (or close)?
As I think about your question a bit more, I'm wondering if my answer missed the mark. The problem with targeting a "zero ending balance" result is that the ending portfolio balance isn't a hard and fast number that pops out of the simulation. Rather, it's a probabilistic result. The endin...

Re: Is there a way to have a plan finish with zero $ (or close)?
If I understand your question, you're looking for a simulation that takes a probability of success and returns the maximum spending amount your plan can support given that probability. Unfortunately, the simulation algorithm doesn't quite work that way. Each of the 10,000 simulation runs tries to fu...

Re: Pre retirement savings
Hello again, The general methodology that you've described for how you "inflated" your 2004 expenses sounds reasonable to me. In general, you should put all values into the planner in "today's value" dollars, so as you indicated, you'd put the same value in for expenses whether y...

Re: Pre retirement savings
Hello, I agree that additional no-cola options would be good to have and they are on the list for a future version of the planner. I did a quick google search for retirement plan contribution limits and I found this site . I can't vouch for the accuracy of their information, but they provide a nice ...

Re: Pre retirement savings
Just to make sure I understand what I am seeing on the screen, does the thin black line in the graph represent the number of portfolios that were exhausted in a given year? I am viewing the results as "show failures (number of times money ran out)". That's correct. You can also see this i...

Re: Pre retirement savings
Hello and thanks for posting. Unfortunately, the planner doesn't provide an easy way to accomplish what you'd like to do. The only approach that I can suggest would be to use "additional inputs" and break the contributions into several 5 year periods. Set it up so the contributions get sma...
