Re: Median withdrawal increasing when portfolio value is 0
Peter, Yes, the annual retirement spending is the amount you get to take home after taxes. In the simulation, withdrawals from the taxable portfolio don't have tax implications since the simulation taxes portfolio gains when they happen (not entirely realistic, but workable). The implicit assumption...

Re: Median withdrawal increasing when portfolio value is 0
Peter, I believe you've found a bug, or at least a condition I didn't expect. It appears that when the portfolio runs out of money, I incorrectly add income taxes to the withdrawal amount, artificially inflating the withdrawal amount in the case of an exhausted portfolio. This is only an issue in si...

Re: Questions about inflation and spending policy triggers
Are all the output $s inflation adjusted? Yes, all input and output values throughout the program are shown in "current value" dollars. Are 1x and 2x starting retirement value triggers in ‘spending policies’ inflation adjusted? Yes, these are also inflation adjusted. Thanks for the feedba...

Re: Can you save the planner inputs?
Sorry. but the tool doesn't have the capability to save your settings.
The values you're seeing are the program defaults.
There is a standalone/downloadable version of the planner coming soon and that version will allow you to save your inputs.

Re: Blank gray screen and RunSim not found error reported?
Hello, Sorry you're having trouble running the planner. The symptoms you're describing haven't been reported before, but that doesn't really mean much with the variety of systems out there. One simple thing to check in your browser options is to make sure Java is enabled. Also, if you have the java ...

Re: How to enter a future one-time payment on additional inputs?
Thanks for trying out the planner and for the question. Your assumption about the need to discount the future payment seems correct for the scenario you've described. It may be a little counter intuitive, but all simulation inputs need to be given in today's dollars. I probably could have done the d...

Re: Tax rates and how can a spouse be added to the calculator?
Hello, I'm glad you're finding the planner useful. The investment tax rate is an average tax rate. I multiply the annual portfolio growth by this rate to compute taxes due. Also, I do the same with income tax rate if you have retirement income sources that are taxable, so that too is an average rate...

Re: Problems running the planner with older version of MAC OS
Unfortunately, the screenshot approach is usually the best bet. You can try the browser print button and it does work someone (depending on the browser). This is one of the drawbacks of using Java (in addition to the headaches of getting Java to run on the platform). For security reasons (to protect...

Re: Problems running the planner with older version of MAC OS
Hello, I'm not very familiar with the MAC OS vs. Java version dependency matrix so I may not completely understand the issue. In any case, I thought I set up the project to allow older versions of Java, but I noticed that I inadvertently introduced a dependency on java version 1.5. I've rebuilt the ...

Re: Help solving a blank screen/java error problem?
Hmmm. I'm confused as to what might cause what you're seeing. Here are a couple of things to try: 1) in IE, select Tools->Internet options from the menu. Once in Internet options, choose the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down in that tab until you see "Java" and see what you see. 2) Als...
