Re: Using goal seek but with a consistent withdrawal rate
I assume the reason the withdrawal rate gets to 15% is because you specified expenses that require that high of a withdrawal in those years. If that high of withdrawal rate is unrealistic, what would you like the simulation to do differently in those years and how should it decide what's reasonable?...

Re: how to model QCDs?
The planner doesn't handle qualified charitable distributions explicitly, but you could probably model the impact by setting up a negative savings cash flow from the tax deferred portfolio. You can use the memo field to document what the cash flow is for. The ability to do negative savings cash flow...

Re: Simple question regarding time periods
If I specify a time period in the planner, let's say a 30 year plan length age 65 to age 95, what does this really mean? Doesn't that carry me right until my 96th birthday? Why would I think that? Because 65 would specify the year from the moment I turn 65 and then the entire year following, until ...

Re: How many years historical data to use when calculating return avg and std dev
I think if you ask 5 people how to do this you'll likely get 5 answers. I like to use a tool developed by someone on the Bogleheads.org forum called Simba's backtesting spreadsheet. The spreadsheet has historical returns for lots index funds that track common asset classes. You can enter your portfo...

Re: Social Security case
Thanks for clarifying this. I was afraid I had missed a rules change or something.
There probably are some people still receiving earned income after their RMDs start, but I'd guess it's not a super likely situation.

Re: Social Security case
There isn't a straightforward workaround for this unless you're not using the taxable portfolio for anything else. If only the RMDs are in the taxable portfolio, you can set the investment tax rate to zero. But I'm confused about why you don't want the gains that the RMD earns to be taxed. I didn't ...

Re: Social Security case
Any RMDs that don't get used for expenses are automatically added to the taxable portfolio. Since the taxable portfolio is carried at a 100% cost basis, withdrawals from this portfolio are tax free. To keep the tax basis of the taxable portfolio at 100%, portfolio gains are taxed fully in the year th...

Re: Custom Withdrawl Order With Dividends vs. Asset Sales
Unfortunately this isn't something that the planner can easily support and it's not something that's likely to be added in the future.
I haven't done a check of the competition in a while, but maybe there's another retirement planner that would be a better fit, given what you're trying to do.

When you set the investing style to custom, the "Return - Average" and "Return - Std Dev" input fields below become active and can be edited directly based on the expected return and standard deviation of your portfolio.
