Re: Take RMDs from tax deferred accounts

The RMD checkbox is mostly used by people in other countries that don't have a requirement to make regular withdrawals from their tax deferred accounts as we do in the US.

Re: Stand alone will not start on new computer WIN7

Now that Java seems to be installed correctly, it might be worth it to uninstall FRP and reinstall it. Once reinstalled, if it still doesn't work, go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Flexible Retirement Planner\frp.exe and right click on frp.exe and select properties. From there, click the security tab and...

Re: Stand alone will not start on new computer WIN7

Hmmm. This is a mystery. These issues are almost always from a corrupted Java installation or a misconfiguration in Java's security settings. Uninstalling and reinstalling Java generally fixes any problems. One possibility is that there are multiple versions of Java installed on your computer and af...

Re: Stand alone will not start on new computer WIN7

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting the program to run. What's the exact error you get? Also, what do you mean when you say 'web applet'? I assume from the post title you're trying to run the standalone version of the planner after downloading and installing it on your computer. Is that correct?...

Re: Effect of Additional Expense Input

If the amount was already included in your estimate of annual expenses, it would make sense to deduct it. If you look at the table in the detailed view tab, you can see a year-by-year listing of all the planner values, including the net withdrawal amount needed to fund your expenses. One note is tha...

Re: What's next?

Joel, Thanks for the kudos on the planner. The truth is I don't have much in the pipeline for new features. The sensitivity analysis feature that I added a couple years back was really the last big functionality push. I did add some enhancements to the COLA stuff in additional inputs last year, but ...

Re: Where do I enter information for my spouse?

Usually it makes sense to do that in the Additional Inputs window. When you create cash flows in this additional inputs window, the key is that everything is keyed off the ages entered on the main window. So assuming you entered your own current age and retirement age on the main window, when you en...

Re: How are Social Security Benefits Taxed in an FRP Model

The simulation logic taxes Social Security income based on the average tax rate that you enter when you create the SS cash flow in additional inputs. The planner has lots of flexibility, but it doesn't attempt to model your specific tax situation. That means it's up to you to understand roughly how ...

Re: Returns: nominal or adjusted?

Put simply, does the value one enters for inflation interact with the portfolio return value, and if so have the numbers that are returned taken this interaction into account? They do interact and the numbers fully take this interaction into account. The best way to understand the interaction is to...

Re: Returns: nominal or adjusted?

I think maybe a source of confusion is that the detailed view shows all dollar amounts in present value (2017) dollars. The inflation rate and the rate of return are very interlinked, but inflation can also have an impact on a retirement plan that's independent of the rate of return. The main exampl...
