Take RMDs from tax deferred accounts

Post by gg80108 »

On Settings, I unchecked "Take RMDs from tax deferred accounts" expecting the portfolio to gain value, but the account value went down dramatically. Wondering why this box is even here since RMDs from deferred account is a sure thing. I have qualified annuity income that kicks in and covers the RMDs so did not want to deduct an extra .

The RMD checkbox is mostly used by people in other countries that don't have a requirement to make regular withdrawals from their tax deferred accounts as we do in the US.

I'm not sure I understand when you said the portfolio value went down dramatically when you unchecked the 'take RMDs' checkbox. My guess is that there's something else going on to cause that, or something isn't as expected.

Usually, unchecking that box makes only a slight difference in the end result, mainly due to the taxes not being withdrawn from the RMDs.
