"Show failures"

Post by Aholiab »

When I run my simulation, I can check a box at the bottom to "Show failures (times money ran out)," whereupon a zigzag appears.

Does the height of the zigzag refer to the y-axis? If so, how? Is it showing what additional funds I would need to make it to life expectancy?

The 'show failures' option on the graph adds a line that shows the number of times the simulation ran out of money in a given year. So the x axis is the year and the y axis is the number of times the sim ran out of money (out of 10,000 simulation iterations) that year.

You can see the data that's used to draw the 'show failures' line by clicking the Detail View tab and looking at the column labelled Prob. Success (# Failures).

Mostly, the y-axis refers to the portfolio value.

For "Show failures," does the y-axis also refer to how many of the 10,000 simulations are failures? Therefore a percentage, top to bottom is 0% to 100%?

Yes. There's no additional label on the y-axis, but that's what's going on.

This is described in the documentation pages here:
