Adventures installing on Ubuntu 24.04 Linux

Post by ochotona »

I'm not a Linux savant by any means, but I thought I'd give FRP a try on my Ubuntu 24.04 dual-boot (Windows or Linux) laptop. By the way, this has Java installed by default, so I didn't have to do anything to get Java.

I got the download for Mac/Linux, that was easy.

I tried double-clicking on the launch-frp-application.jnlp file as directed in the ReadMe.txt, but that only brought me to a browser security warning which I could not evade.

I simple moved the frp-standalone-04-04-02/manual-install folder to a location of my choosing, in a terminal window I changed the permission of frp.jar so that it would execute

chmod -x frp,jar

Then I double-clicked on frp.jar and the program came up! (also right-click and "Open with OpenJDK Java 11 Runtime" works). The font colors, however, are all screwed up, does anyone know how to adjust the colors so that they are the same as Windows and actually legible? (AND THE ANSWER IS HERE... I had to change my theme from Dark to Default).

I do have one last question - how do I make a desktop icon which, if clicked, will open the FRP software, using one of the icon image files provided? I guess I need a .desktop file but I don't know how to set one up or borrow something close which can just be modified. Thanks.

Glad you figured out the font color thing. I have Java 21 on an ubuntu 24.4 VM and FRP was showing up fine for me, so I was looking into trying to get Java 11 working on my. I knew I had tried it in the past, but it's been a while so I thought maybe something got messed up. Anyhow, glad you figured that out.

In terms of the jnlp, web start was deprecated in Java 11, so if you want to use native jnlp you'd need to go back to Java 8. Another option is icedtea-netx, but it's been a while since I've tried that.
